How long have you been emo? May 25 2008, 11:00 AM
Just interested in this... I have been into the emo scene since 2003. Pretty tough to say when you turned "emo" I guess so you can say when you became "alternative".. This is all very stereotypical I know, but that's how society is.

'This is all very stereotypical I know, but that's how society is.' but your just enforcing that completly :| once people start thinking they are emo, they loose their identity, their real one, like you say in the 'what is emo section(this is ridiculous btw) 'When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo include a number of the following terms: sensitive, shy, quiet, sad, introverted, glum, self-pitying, mysterious and angst ridden. Depression and broken-heartedness are sometimes used to describe the emo personality. Emo's feel society doesn't accept them, they are outcasts and nobody understands them!' so theres this girl who thinks shes emo right, then she stumbles across this piece of crap, and suddenly she doubts HERSELF,because shes not mysterious or angst ridden! omg she hasnt even had her heart broken! but she thought she was emo! so theres this girl and shes not emo, shes not anything any more. its so patronizing aswell. and you do know this site is going to be a major pisstake for everyone except 0.0000000001 percent of the world.i mean really :| im not saying this site shouldnt exist, but you could of handled this a bit better..

Becca, do you even know what emo is, at all? I mean, you go on about how I'm 'turning scene' because I wear skinnies, have my lip pierced and spike the back of my hair. But believe it or not, emo had been doing that for years before scene even existed. But honestly, if you've come here to complain about emo as much as you have in real life, you're not going to last long.

That's a good argument and I agree. People should just get on with their own lives and stop complaining about what emo is and isn't. I find this a nice site, not one where people just bitch about emo etc. I don't understand all this 'scene' shit. I, myself, think it's just full of wannabe's and fakers who don't wish to be classed as emo but whatever.

I take all these comments seriously and those info pages have to generalise the emo scene. I may alter the wording slightly to stress this. Some people may read into it more than others. This site certainly is not encouraging people to self or any of the negative issues wrongly associated with the sub-culture. If someone wants to get into the 'emo scene' it is their own choice.

in rl,i do not get taken seriously(and shouldnt :)! but its like, when you write it down, and nobody has anything to judge you by but a profile, you can get your point across much easier :\ this is the point where i say NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ME *CRY* booyaaaaaa ohhh that pisses me off so much when people under estimate me :|

I understand that "it's wierd to say you 'turned' emo lol". As I have stated "This is all very stereotypical I know, but that's how society is." It's just interesting to know when people starting getting into the 'emo scene'. becca even if you don't think you should be taken seriously, your comments have made me look over the text and a few slight changes will be done.

Hmmmm I think the meaning of the question is getting lost a little bit here. A lot (not all) people who decided to take an interest or get into the Emo scene and lifestyle stems from (in my opinion) an individuals desire to be something different for the 'norm'. The collective term usual associated with that is 'alternative'. I know from my personal experience I have always wanted to be something other than what appears to be a 'normal life' as dictated by society and when I was in my early teens I set out to be alternative, individual and just myself on my own, different to everyone else. However this can quickly become a very lonely existence. I know for myself it was very easy to start thinking that I was strange/weird etc (no comments please :P), so I began to seek out people who perhaps had similar interests and ideas as myself. I guess I needed to know I wasn't alone. I didn't want to be part of, or accepted by 'normal society' but I didn't want to be alone either. Even if Emo's are often described by such terms as "sensitive, shy, quiet, sad, introverted, glum, self-pitying, mysterious and angst ridden", as long as that person is themselves is it really a huge crime? I am an 'uber-individual' and I do not adapt or mold myself for anyone, but I am happy that I have friends who do think about and enjoy the some of the same things that I do and I would feel very alone if I didn't have them. The flip side is, I have some friends who have no wish to be an individual and have a need to be guided by the lives of their friends, I personally have no issue with this, some people have personalities that are strong and allow them to be individuals, some people prefer to follow the lead of their social group(s) and by doing so, gain acceptance and a place where they feel comfortable, which in my opinion is what it's all about. Sorry "beccaRAWR", I am going to have to seriously disagree with you on your comment "and you do know this site is going to be a major pisstake for everyone except 0.0000000001 percent of the world.i mean really :|", you appear to be going on the assumption that anyone who joins this site is going to somehow end up being worse off because of it, have you not considered that perhaps this site or sites like it may be a great help and comfort to people who were feeling alone prior to finding it? I will say that I don't like stereotyping of anyone, but everyone gets stereotyped, no matter if you're straight, homosexual, bisexual, a rocker, a chav, an emo, an indie, a muslim, a christian, a drinker, a smoker, a drug taker, a tea-teetotaler, no matter however you conduct your life, you will get stereotyped in some way. I live my life as myself, I am me and I don't mold myself to fit in with anyone or anything, but I know that I need people around me who have similar ideals to myself and as I have found fits largely into the Emo genre more than anything else, and that gives me a sense of belonging somewhere and that I'm not totally alone.

Yeah but once this website becomes more popular, people are just going to take the mick! My friend already has made a account just basically taking the piss out of the emo genre. Its a good idea that wont work, and its the emos fault in the first place(EVERYONE BLAMES ME FOR EVERYTHING,NOONE WILL EVER UNDERSTAND *CRY*),causing this rivalry between emos and the rest of the worlds sub-cultures. Have you saw the pro-ana sites? I think people will react to this one in the same way.To be honest,if you want help,go on a help site for everyone, dont isolate yourself, thinking you are different in your problems, just because your so emo.To right love on her arms is a great website for help.

*stops* *listens* *stares* this is interesting!plz go on!:)

xlil_emo_mex or whatever what do you think about the pro ana sites? do you think because these anorexics have a place to gather and share tips they should? do you think it will help them? the sad thing is,they pass themselves of as support sites. dont you think it just escalates the problem? that was completly of topic, but can you see how similar this is. i admit its alot worse on the pro anorexia websites, but i really need something to shock you into seeing my point of view. its a touchy subject and thats why it works >.<
