nerdy rant thing. Dec 11 2010, 12:42 PM
warning; this post is stupid. I feel kind of awkward posting this here. It's not like I'd prefer to post it somewhere else, I'd rather just not post it at all, but I must admit (though i hate to do so) i would like some help. Hi there. I'm Asian, and I go to a high-ranked technical institute. I'm expected by not only my parents but also myself to have good grades (straight As, with the occasional B). I feel like I can accomplish this. Today, I woke up at 4AM to study my weakest subject (physics). It's not "oh you're asian so if you think you're bad at this you probably got a 80 which is good anyway". I'm REALLY bad at it. In high school , I had to take the subject twice (once with a 64, the second time with a 65). This is a requirement for my major that i can't get out of. I'm just so frustrated with this subject; i've tried tutoring, talking with the professor during his office hours, emailing him about the homework questions, EVERYTHIng, but I'm still doing terribly. i know this sounds really stupid. but i dont deal with stress well, and this is all very stressful. when im stressed, i usually sleep on it. if that doesn't work, i try some more drastic measures (you know what im talking about, I have 3 bandages on my arm right now). i dont know what to do with myself anymore. i don't know what to do with myself anymore and i dont know what yeah its lame, i know =/ any advice? (if not thats fine, i feel better writing this out).

...May I pose a serious (but perhaps stupid and ill-educated) question? If it is a requirement for your major, does that mean you will be using it in said major? Because, if that's correct...Perhaps you should not be going into this major if you are having a hard time with it. If not, my only suggestion to you is that maybe you are stressing so terribly that you are clouding your mind with worry about failing and not absorbing the information you need to know. This happens to me sometimes in math classes. It seems to me you are making and effort to learn, and so you should be. Perhaps you need a different way of studying? People learn in different ways. Oh, and finally-This is not a stupid nerdy rant! My mother always says if it is bothering you, it is not stupid. Yes, I just quoted my mother, and that is a nerdy thing to do. One more thing. To imply we would judge you by your race concerning your intelligence doesn't give us much credit, does it? Just saying. That would imply I, as a Latina/Irish, am always drunk and only worthy of hard labour in a field. But I know you didn't mean anything by it, so it's all good. :)

Taking a nice walk to clear your head will help with the stress.

^agreed, sometimes is not good to overstudy, overstudying leads to stress and stress leads to you not functioning properly so you dont take in information when u study. this goes in a constant cycle. what u need to do is have atleast a day off, sleep in, hang out with friends and lower stress levels and the next day (if you wish) u can study better. i did my final exams last year and i probably had more days hanging out with friends than studying alone, at the end i got pretty good results. as for the asian bit, im asian too but all parents are the same and will love you no matter what :3 also have u tried to study with a group of friends? it always helps. i remember last year my whole dance crew studied the main subjects together (english and maths) we danced for an hour then studied for an hour etc etc. try and find your best method and good luck :)

i could "nerdy rant" along with you m8.. i study what my parents teach so i'm excepted to be perect at what i do.. which i'm not and at times the work can be hard! with regards to physics being a problem.. i'll talk to some of my friends who do it who might be able to give you some tips with regards to what subject area. with relation to the stress, it is best that you take care of what you can, do not exceed that. ME, i'm Christian so i just work hard put in my all and then leave the rest to God.. but this theory is applicable to you if you are religious or not. TO avoid stressing over stuff, you do what is in your power to do and then once you have done that accept it and move on! it is impossible for a human being to obtain perfection, so just aim to do your best! that's all anyone should ask for! Like the guys above said,, take a walk or just relax... stressing just makes things worse. Also.. i second the group study tip! it really helps! Also look on the bright side, at least you are able to make it into a top school and score good grades in most of your subjects. There are some people who can't finish high school and who will be barred from achieving what they want to because of society's mindset towards those who do not achieve success via book work... if you have any further concerns, just talk about it. nothing is too big or small to be mentioned here! this is a community in which the members do not discriminate :)

make revision/flash cards these really help you understand things. . .so put what you need to understand on one side and the answer on the other and when you know the cards off by heart then move on. . .it will help you and calm down your stress levels x

Everybody has their weak subjects, but I found if I over studied and didn't take regular breaks I got even more stressed... and if you do get stressed find something that helps you relieve that stress.. For me it was exercising and playing guitar, but you could do whatever. Make a study plan, and dedicate times for each subject, relaxation, sleep, eating , etc... Fortunately and unfortunately (which ever way you view it) I didn't have anyone pressuring me to do good, so I can't understand how you feel, but I did pressure myself. I still did rubbish but that was to do with illness... so it's irrelevant... People have probably already said some of this but yeah... You should be proud that you can do so well, and in the end someone is probably going to criticise that but if you did your best, and got what you wanted that is all that matters. Everybody has their downfalls and they have to work to get back up. I would have loved to be on my way to a degree in university now, but I have basic qualifications, or even in a good job, and I'd do anything just to have that as stupid as it sounds. I'm really just saying this to show you how lucky you are to be blessed with the opportunity of a top education, so if you use it to your advantage and just do your best, eventually it will be over and you'll be faced with new challenges to overcome, be it in you major or future career. An that is basically a life lesson my grandmother told me once... xD SO I hope this isn't too... pushy? or comes off like mean or anything, and helps you a bit. :)

Well as ever people are giving great advice. From experience it's worthwhile testing each other with your friends. Also make notes and as you memorise them reduce the notes further and further until there are just key bullet points. I did pretty well in education from hard work, but some relatives have done quite poorly and still in great jobs.
