Guitar amp stack Feb 23 2011, 06:35 PM
I assume there are others playing guitar here. Looking at some stacks, as I'm in need of a new amp, and want to go for something more useful this time, combo's and small amps doesn't do the trick when more sound is needed. Been looking abit at the Laney GH50L with GS412IA stack. Opinions or other sugestion in the same price range ? My combo is a Laney TF200 and like the sound Laney amps has.

Hey i play guitar and know a bit about this stuff, what's your budget? You ever considered getting stuff second hand? I got a marshall jcm2000 which i got s/ hand and its great for the price i got it for!! Check out Orange, Line 6 and Laney. Depends what kinda sound you're after.

Cool Matt. Well, I kinda haven't thought much about budget, but these stuff is awefully expencive in Norway compared to UK or US prices. So I'll prolly end up with something in the same price range as the stack setup I wrote in my first post. Second hand is of course an option, tho it's hard to find what you want second hand around here. Mostly Mesa Boogies and the high priced Marshalls that are sold second hand, those are abit out of my range prolly. Well, I got a Laney combo now, like the sound they have. Orange has a nice sound, but is abit pricey for the sound I need. The ones in same range as the Laney stack I've looked at doesn't give much more sound then my combo allready do. Line 6 isn't really my taste.

Haven't really played through a Laney before, primarily Marshalls, Fenders, Mesa Boogie and Line 6. What would be cool is to get down your local shop if there is one with your guitar and try out ones you like the look of, i do it all the time see if you can get the same sound out of every single one you plug into, i normally achieve it. Combos aren't a bad thing necessarily, esp if you're being mic'd up in venues, you can crank it louder whereas with a stack you can only put it on 2 or 3 and you don't get the maximum gain out of it. The other option is pedals but again you need to know what you want to achieve before splashing the cash. Hope this helps!

Well, the store with some selection got utterly crap employers. So I would have to go a couple of miles to get an ok store to test it in. Tho I'll prolly will do that when buying, but want some tips and opinions before I do so. Well, I mainly use stomp boxes for effects, so main need is something that can put through a good clean sound without distorting the sound picture on high levels. And combo's can be abit "weak" in that area compared to stacks.

A couple of miles isn't too far for testing is it? I was going to ask my dad but he is at at the moment.

Sucks there's no local music shop, there's none round where i live either have to get a train in to my nearest one but i do my work round there anyway so its ok. Fender do good clean sounds, but dependent on price you're a bit limited. Line 6 have good crunchy tones too. If you wanna crunch up a clean channel consider a Boss Blues Driver pedal gives you more 'dirt' if you like lol. Vox are worth a try, if you're interested, wallet friendly too.

I use the Vox Bulldog Distortion, Boss DS-2 and Boss BF-2 for effects and crunch. Those usually gets me the sounds I want (:

That's cool, never got on with DS1s and 2s lol, too fuzzy for my liking. But with the amp setup i have now i hardly need any pedals i have my 3 sounds clean, overdrive and a boost. All i need really, less tone sucking through pedals that way, add some chorus and i'm away! Playing tonight actually so should be good.

Been looking to see if I could find some 2nd hand amps now. Didn't find any of the brands I wanted that wasn't priced to hell and back. But found 3 half stacks that was at ok price for 2nd hand. -An Ashdown Fallen Angel 60W with 4x12" Ashdown cabinet. -A Morgan GVH-100 with 4x12" Morgan cabinet. -A Bugera 6260 with 4x12" Bugera cabinet. Any experiences with any of these stacks ?

Not heard of the last 2 makes, i have heard of Ashdown but only for bass amps. Did you like the sound of any of them in particular? And could you get the same sound out of all 3?

I've only tested the Morgan, the other 2 I haven't been able to test out yet. The Morgan is an ok enough sound. From what I've read on forums both the Bugera (that's in the Behringer line) and Ashdown has had some reliability issues. How is your experience with Ashdown for bass?

Its been a good solid sound whenever i've used it, i'm not primarily a bass player but i liked the Ashdown amp, nice and low end tone, depends what kinda sound you're after though, i'm assuming heavy, so lots of bottom end is good.
