How important is musical taste in a partner? Mar 03 2011, 01:24 PM
Just interested. Would you date someone if they had a totally different taste in music or wouldn't it bother you?

Music is a fantastic link between people and having someone listen to totally different stuff to you can be hard as music influences peoples lives. I'd have to be with someone who had similar tastes in music

If they can accept the type of music I listen to then I can accept them and their tastes. Doesn't mean I have to listen to their stuff with them though >.>

it does not really matter to me. My gf and I have different music taste, to an extent,. Before we got together I let her hear some of the emo music I like/ liked, the music that I used relate to.. etc.. just so she could understand me.. cause I take music very seriously etc.. So ye. a partner who is tolerant.and different is nice. I like diversity.

Musical taste is very important to me. It must be similar, based on the fact that (generally, not always) people who like similar music have similar views on other things. It doesn't have to be exactly like my tastes, of course. Variation and diversity is the spice of life, they say. Just as long as they are respectful of our differences in music and don't hack on any of my bands. They could even show me bands that I haven't heard of or change my mind on some. That's always cool. :) My ex had similar tastes in music, but he liked A LOT of music I didn't just dislike, but HATED and lo-and-behold we didn't make it because we were too different. So yeah, just an example.

Diversety is of course very important to a relationship, else it can end up boring. Then again, my taste in music is pretty broad so it's hard not to atleast have something in common :p

it would bother me alot, but its hard 2 find ppl who hav my tast in music at my age =( but like, when u meat up with him/her they would always be listerning 2 "music" that makes u want 2 just take there ipod and smash, then burn it........in the depts of hell. and that means u cant listen 2 your music while your gf/bf is there as well.

It would totally bother me, because music is a huge part of my life, and if they couldn't understand my music, they wouldn't understand me

It would bother me if they made a fuss about it and was constantly like "ehh that band is shit" and I like to go to gigs so it would be nice if they would like to come too. :) And If they couldn't hold a decent conversation about music then that would kinda suck. Either way it's good to have some differences to your partner. :P

I know a certain girl that might like me, but she isn't really into the music I am. If I'm being honest it certainly feels like a negative..
