True emo? Response? O_O (confusion) Apr 13 2011, 10:27 AM
v=u6_yuT5696s Any responses to this? I know music changes, but this drastic from it's punkside to it's own musical style, it really amazes me and it made me think, is what we think is emo, emo at all? I know of bands like Rites of Spring, Antioch Arrow, Embrace etc. but did it really change that drastic? or is it some other genre? or just secondwave? or thirdwave or wtf it is? most of the bands self-claimed "emos" listen to are metalcore.....

I don't particularly care what genre of music i listen to . If i like it , i'll listen to it . Hey , i still like other genres and will listen to mainstream music every once in a while if it happens to be good . I'm not just some close minded "emo" kid . I can appreciate different types of music . I personally don't think i am , nor claim to be "emo" . I'm just on this site because i think people here have similar tastes to me . (Wow . I used the word "I" a lot ;P)

That was a selection from alot of good bands. Anyway I think that there is alot of things that people feel they have to do,look like and listen to, to be emo. I also wouldnt call myself emo. And am also on this site because I enjoy alot of similar things with people here.

Well, the word "emo" was mostly used by punks who hated the new movement of emotive hardcore music. They called the fans "emo" as an insult, I listen to alot of genres aswell, just if they they have real instruments and not any synthesizer techno mashing jibber jabber, techno gets me in a bad mood. I hate how people use the term "emo" to describe a way of living or personality, when it's music genre in which the fans are called "emos" nothing more..... but so many claims that the music died in th 90's

This debate is never-ending and I have discussed it lots before. Simply put emo, screamo, metalcore, etc are all pretty daft names anyway and it's very hard to classify bands into the multitude of genres out there nowadays. Lets just say they are all alternative or rock bands. However I do urge those who have never heard 'emo' bands of the past to check them out. See our emo music section.

I agree with everyone, especially the parts about not really calling myself 'emo,' it just happens to be a subculture I fit into neatly. I don't think there really is such a thing as 'emo' music, not anymore. I guest rock mixed with soft lyrics and screaming is 'emo.' It's just kinda like soft-core metal. If there is such a thing. I guess. I don't know. -___-;

What they claim to be "real" emo actually sounds like the kinda stuff that my dad listens to, and as such I started to like as a kid :L But yeah, I don't really think labelling music matters, the only time it does is when I want to see if I might like a new band, so I think it's good if they say, for instance, "for lovers of Paramore and You Me At Six". But generally, I don't really care what genre the music that I listen to is, I listen to most stuff (I describe my music taste as everything from the Black Eyed Peas to Bullet For My Valentine XD). I agree though, I came here because I see myself as alternative rather than, strictly speaking, emo. :)

What they "claim" to be real emo, is really Real emo from the 80s / 90s from 94 secondwave emo started and ended in 2000, then todays emo started thirdwave i can give you a list of what they see as real emo/screamo, but those who posted this video are emo veterans meaning they are more related to punk than the emo scene nowadays. And it's not labels it's genres, They are classified into certain groups because of it's content. It's how they keep it organized, I have a limited taste, which means it's hard for me to like every other genre, for example, I can't stand pop or dance music, since i myself think the whole concept of dancing is stupid (don't hate me for saying that, i can't dance and i do not want to learn) I can't stand any other rap except Eminem cause he actually writes GOOD lyrics, i can't stand Techno, i have lot's of arguments why but i don't want to get this of topic and start a huge music debate...... List Emo:Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon, Funeral Dinner, Gray Matter, Hot Cross, Off Minor, Indian Summer, Sleepytime Trio, etc... Screamo: Saetia, Orchid, Pg. 99, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, Love Like...Electrocution, Angel Hair, Antioch Arrow, Majority Rule, Usurp Synapse, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, etc...

The trouble is 'emo' has become a term relating to any sort of song with emotional lyrics for a some people. I saw someone discussing if Pink was an emo band recently. End of discussion!!
