To Drive Or Not To Drive? May 22 2011, 01:57 PM
So, I'm 17, and have been for 3 months now, but I haven't started driving lessons and have no will to do so. I have my reasons: 1. By the time I've passed my test, it'll be nearly time for me to go off to uni, where I won't be allowed a car on campus. 2. I'd rather spend my time studying than learning to drive. 3. It's very expensive, and I don't want to spend that amount of money on something til I have a higher salary. 4. The idea of driving doesn't appeal to me at all. In fact, it scares me. 5. I wouldn't trust myself behind the wheel of a car. But now... I'm feeling very pressured to learn to drive. My parents, particularly my dad, are being pushy about me learning to drive (I know my parents have to drive me around places, but I do pay them petrol money), and now I feel like I'm a disappointment to my parents because their 17 year old daughter isn't learning to drive. Plus I already felt guilty because one of my friend's dads is a driving instructor and I'd like to be able to give them some business, I'd already decided that when I DO learn to drive, it will be through him, but I just feel guilty :/ And plus, none of my friends really seem to understand why I don't wanna drive. I mean, they understand my logic, but they just don't get why I have to urge to learn. So... am I being really selfish by not learning to drive?

Im almost 19 I have avoided getting my license for the almost the same reasons as you. its not selfish if you dont want to waste time and money. As far as I can see it, its personal preference and thats all there is to it

I passed my test when I was 23 (yeah I know 23???) but that was down to confidence. BUT... I had to get out there and start learning to drive. I passed first time in my theory and first time in my pratical test. Its upto you at the end of the day. If you can't afford to do it then don't do it. Simple as that. I know that things have changed a little since I passed my test back in 2003. It is now expensive to learn to drive. I'm not sure how much it is to pay for theory and pratical tests. I hear that you now have to score 50 in the theory. I had to score 30 back in 2003. In the 10 minutes of your pratical exam you will now be asked to follow the signs to a certain place. They will be checking to see if you have been checking your mirrors ;).

Sorry. I was a bit wrong with the theory test score. It is 43 out of 50 and 44 out of 75 for hazard perception test. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/TheoryTest/DG_4022534

Very interesting question... From experience I'd say wait till after uni now. That's not selfish at all! I didn't do that simply because I'm crazy about cars, but having a car at uni wasn't really needed (I lived away from home).

I kinda feel different as getting a driving licence was the single best thing that ever happened to me. Immediately having the op to just get away, anywhere anytime I wanted just woke me up. Its a long time ago (really long time) but I still just jet off somewhere if I feel low. You could try another route and it would help expense wise too plus its far more exciting thats to get a motorbike or even a scooter. cheap insurance ,and road tax (uk) no parking fees, park anywhere. no need to pass test for low powered bike or scooter. Theres something about riding a bike that gives a real buzz something as I say I still feel now
