Emotive Hardcore Sep 09 2011, 02:16 AM
There’s big controversy over this. I don’t understand why. It’s funny when teenagers complain how no one over the age of 25 understand what emo is, which is why emo began 25 years ago with actual adults, right? I mean, it’s not like emo was started by infants 25 years ago. Rites of Spring, Embrace… certainly not infants at the time. Basically, Emotive Hardcore is a subgenre of Hardcore Punk is a subgenre of Punk. We can safely assume that with that in mind, Emotive Hardcore is DIY because Punk is DIY. This puts emo out of the mainstream by default. Now, if that’s so true, why does everyone know the term, emo is so popular, and mainstream bands are “emo.” In the 90s when “emo died” Indie, being popular at the time, was confused with Emotive Hardcore because of the “emotional lyrics.” (Clearly this isn’t the only qualifier for a band being emo since ALL music is emotional) With the popularity, the term lost meaning, and slowly began to be used to mean anything overly emotional. While there are those who like to believe that emo is still an insult to those who listen to emotive hardcore, like myself, the popular belief still remains among 13 year olds that emo means emotional. Now you’re probably wondering about emo being an insult. Well, when Emotive Hardcore began, it was a bunch of kids from the Hardcore Punk scene who wanted to use the sound of this angry genre of music to express more emotions than simply anger. This prompted the name “Emotional Hardcore.” Of course, Emotional Hardcore didn’t stick since Hardcore Punk was already emotional, so it became “Emotive Hardcore.” Many fans of Hardcore Punk stayed true to their scene and saw this new genre as a lesser genres. They went to many shows screaming insults at bands and their fans alike. The most popular of these insults that came about was “emo,” the word you know today. Emotive Hardcore does have it’s own subgenres, of course. Screamo is one of the most popular, but, contrary to popular belief, any band with screaming is not screamo. For an accurate list of screamo bands “skramz” certainly brings up more actual screamo. While there are plenty of other subgenres, they’re aren’t nearly mixed up enough to be worth correcting. There are things like emoviolence (a mixture of emotive hardcore and power violence), kittencore (a nickname for screamo), and many other names that may come up. People are often skeptical of me for thinking I “know everything,” and I must be wrong because I wasn’t alive 25 years ago, but, believe it or not, I can read things and do research. I can also talk to people who are old enough to have been through it. No, I don’t know everything, but I do know a lot, and I’m not trying to feed false information. This is the truth to the furthest extent of my understanding. Yes, I make fun of kids for thinking they’re “emo,” but I’m allowed to joke and have fun, right? These are mixed between Emotive Hardcore and it’s subgenres. In no particular order: La Dispute Wow, Owls! Transistor Transistor Kontrapunkt Amanda Woodward 1905 I Hate Myself Danse Macabre Orchid City of Caterpillar Cowboys are Indians Joshua Fit For Battle After Words Pg. 99 Hot Cross Funeral Diner Noisy Sins of the Insect Tristan Tzara Index for Potential Suicide A Fine Boat, That Coffin Usurpe Synapse Cap’n Jazz 1000 Travels of Jawarhal Shikari Piebald Ultra Dolphins Tunes for Bears to Dance to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep She Died Real Pretty A Flower Kollapsed Cowboys Become Folk Heroes The Deadwood Divine Cobra Kai The Saddest Landscape A Day in Black and White To Dream of Autumn The Third Memory You and I This is a really small list. There are many more out there. I encourage you to go find them. This is one of the most perfect lists I have ever seen in my 18 years of existence.
