Tattoo sleeve Idea, Opinions? Apr 30 2012, 05:58 AM
When i can afford it and I'm 18 I'm going to get a sleeve, I personally think they are really cool and my father knows a really good tattoo artist, even tho he has not had one done himself. My Base Idea is to have a snake or Dragon coil down my arm to have the mouth come out open at either the palm or the back of my hand. What do you think? I still have to think about what else I'd want to complete the sleeve that will suit it tho. :S

Sounds good to me. Sleeves that are well planned and done properly look amazing.

My main issue with that is most of my life revolves around music, games, anime, books and animals. I would do the whole different things but it could end up looking horrible using these things :3

If you know anyone who's a good artist, tattoo or otherwise, you could ask them to experiment with designs until you find the one you think is perfect. So long as you give them the basic ideas, they'll be able to design something that works :)

Okay let me introduce you to the world of tattoos. 1) Drop the idea of the mouth on the palm, terrible idea, looks cool, sure. Practical? No. Your palms and bottom of you feet shed extra amounts of skin than any other part of your body, meaning the ink will fade FAST. You'd need a touch up every 2-3 months, and with a month for healing your looking at 1-2 months of it looking good without having to take care of it. 2) Find something meaningful to you. Don't get me wrong if you really want it purely for aesthetics go right ahead, tattoos are ART after all. But speaking from experience if you find something that directly relates to YOU as a person you will love it from the day you get it till the day you die. Be careful about getting a tattoo that just looks cool, or else you might end up being the future version of what is today's idiot with barbed wire bands, and meaningless tribal tattoos. 3) Price. Start with a half sleeve idea now, and evolve it into a full sleeve later in life. A GOOD half sleeve will be around $1200-2000, a full sleeve would be around $2500-3000. That may seem like a lot but trust me, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. If you cheap out buy getting artwork done by Bob down the street for $500, you're going to have a painful reminder of how stupid you were as a kid, and laser tattoo removal both hurts WAY worse than a tattoo, and is very expensive. 4) Don't take your dad's word on what is a good artist, go to this guy BY YOURSELF, talk to him, see if he has a portfolio of his past work, talk to him about price range THEN decide. It's also a good idea to talk to other local artists to see their work, and pricing. 5) if this sleeve gets done in 1 sitting, you had a complete idiot tattoo your body. A full sleeve depending on how much detail, coloring, and shading can take from 3-10 sessions till it is finally done, with a month in between each session for healing. 6) Don't commit yourself to any one idea, between now and when your 18 you may change your mind several times on what you want. If you can commit to one idea for at LEAST 1 year before getting it, and THEN you STILL want it, chances are you wont regret it because you definitely thought it over thoroughly. Hoped this helped, and BE SMART ABOUT THESE THINGS.

*feels smug as she has already thought about all above points for her future tattoos* :3 One of my tattoos I've wanted for the last 6 years... and I still can't get it, even though I'm of age, because my mum will kick me out if I do and I don't have the money to live on my own :(
