age limit to dressing emo? Jun 11 2012, 09:19 AM
So I'm 18, and lately my parents have been giving me alot of crap and keep telling me to grow up and start fitting in with society or whatever. My sides are shaved, my nails are painted black, and I wear skinny jeans, vans, designed and band shirts, button up shirts, wristbands, and armwarmers. I'm not exactly sure what my "style" is. Alot of people call me scene or emo. I've heard of 40 year old goths and punks and metalheads. Alternative fashion has no age limits. I'll keep dressing the way I do until the day I die. So...do you guys think there's an age limit to dressing alternative, emo, scene, goth, etc? if so, what age do you think you should start dressing "normal"?

Pfff, there's no age limit. I'm 18 and still dress alternatively (not emo, I tend to change my style based on my mood), my boyfriend's 22 and dresses like a goth, and I don't see either of us stopping for many years yet :)

it depends, if you see being 'emo' just as a fad, as many people around where i live do, then yeah there's an age limit, because your just going to grow out of it as soon as the next 'big thing' comes into fashion, but thats only because they're not really 'emo', they just pretend to be because they think its cool. if your truly 'emo' then its the type of person you are, so thats not gonna change, even when your old. Hell, my mum's kind of an emo and she's nearing 50! she doesnt wear emo clothes that much anymore (she does try to steal my converse though, i litteraly have to hide them where she wont find them :L ), but she still puts me to shame when it comes to being 'an emo' ;L personally, i plan to still be rocking my skinny jeans and band tees well into my eighties, and ill be teaching my grandchildren how to mosh like a boss! . . . or you never know, maybe ill just turn into one of those old cat ladies x3

Nope there shouldn't be an age limit, but as you get older it can be hard to fully express yourself in the workplace.

I'v thought about this alot to. I'm coming upon that age zone 18+, when looking the that way will begin to be more..detrimental to our futures. Because of societies ignorant view on individuality. My suggestion, to myself and all, is alter your style to fit your age. Like when were say..14-22, alot of people still look really young at 22, and i'v seen alot of emo/scene/goth/punk whatever you wanna classify them as, that old and still being quite attractive and making it work. Take for example, well Matt. When you look at his picture, you don't see what you see in some of us/younger "emos". He's adapted his style to suit his age without giving up what he loves. For now, I still paint my nails, dye my hair, wear skinnies, vans, band stuff, wrist bands, etc. I probably will till i'm say 21 or so, then i'll start adapting to suit my age better. Get what I mean?

You haven't heard about 40-yrs old emos cause this style is not so old. And now there's a thought that only kids between 13 and 20 wear like this. Emo is one of the youngest subcultures. Scene is even younger. And the emo style appeared later than music and ideology (firstly they looked more like punks). But I will be emo forever. Even if my bf says that I should grow up and wear more like a woman *-* I'm 20 now and still have this style mixed with visual-kei, punk, rave punk and goth (cause I cannot say that I have only one inspiration). For some ppl it might be childish but that's who I am and I won't adjust. I will express myself in my appearance.

As long as your being yourself then thats all that matters. You do fit into society society has lots of sub cultarals and emo is one of them. If everyone was the same it would be boring

You're to old to be who you want to be when you're dead... Simple really... There was a English teacher at my school, Grumpy as hell, But she was a full blown goth. Just putting it out there.

I don't think there should be an age limit xD I'll dress how I want to dress until I no longer feel comfortable dressing that way :) You shouldn't change your style because all of a sudden people start to say things to you :)

i dont think that there is an age limit whats the point of living if you cant enjoy your self and be who you want to be? i have a lot of respect for people that are older and r still rockin it like they did back in the day. sertain jobs you should have a level of being professional, like say u want to be a lawyer u cant walk in the court room in skinnys and a band tee but who is to say u cant ware a black suit with a cool lime green and black striped tie some tats and gages? no one. i been dressin the way i do since i was 12 and i dont ever plan on giving up my stlye. even when im 30 and being a pycologest u best belive ima still be in all black rockin the cat eye and pullin out the parkin lot blastin hardcore shit.
