age limit to dressing emo? Jun 11 2012, 09:19 AM
So I'm 18, and lately my parents have been giving me alot of crap and keep telling me to grow up and start fitting in with society or whatever. My sides are shaved, my nails are painted black, and I wear skinny jeans, vans, designed and band shirts, button up shirts, wristbands, and armwarmers. I'm not exactly sure what my "style" is. Alot of people call me scene or emo. I've heard of 40 year old goths and punks and metalheads. Alternative fashion has no age limits. I'll keep dressing the way I do until the day I die. So...do you guys think there's an age limit to dressing alternative, emo, scene, goth, etc? if so, what age do you think you should start dressing "normal"?

there's NO age limit to dressing emo. As the posts before have said you learn to adapt it to your age and circumstances ... hence one of the good points about the culture it is still relatively new and flexible so it's easy to do ... and it's possible to see older emo's around today and hopefully in still the future

I say never, as you get much older you can dress emo etc. but tone it down easily. But there are always situations that will require different dress, as in any life style or situation. go for it.

People have been telling me for years to STOP this and STOP that. I even got offerd a small record deal if I would stop dressing the way I do and look "Normal". F THAT! I will always do what I want! You should to. I have had a few day jobs that I have had to change, But that just comes with LIFE. Hold strong as long as your not hurting anyone be FREE.

recently my parents said I should start to dress in more "nomal" way because I'm pregnant and I have to be more mature.. But I don't think my style influence my maturity .. I don't follow any fashion like kids amazed by subcultures for a while.. I just strongly feel myself and my personality that is somehow expressed in the way I look ^ ^

I don't really care what the hell people think of me when I dress in public. There shouldn't be an age limit, but I do agree that the style can be altered as you get older. For me, I sometimes have to change and make my appearance seem more normal during job interviews. Because in the work place, you can't wear skinny neon jeans, band tees, lots of wrist bands and a lot of make up. That's just the way of life. I know a lot of friends that stop dressing the way they dress and their excuse is that it's getting old, they're into this new style, or they can't get a job. I just think... if you're going to change from something to something else, you never honest about who you were in the first place and that's just lame. but I don't think I'll never change, because it's me. I can see myself as an old lady still dressing the way I do.

Any style, honestly, has no age limit. And to be honest, there are some people like me who didn't start adapting to the alternative styles until later in life, mostly because of the pressure to be normal and because I couldn't afford outfits that suit to my taste, until I slowly started to get into the style and trying to find more stuff that appeals to me. So yeah, everybody should enjoy the style they please, whether old or not :)

Theres no real age limit cause you can be whoever you wanna be ofc, but i think at 21 you'd prob transform into goth if we had to put a age on it i guess :P i don't know.
