GCSE Music... Jun 12 2012, 02:05 PM
I'm really worried about this music course I start tomorrow... Is anyone currently on the course and how hard is it? Everyone says you have to be really good but I'm nervous cus I've only been playing for 6 months :/

Didn't do GCSE Music but i recently got my degree in professional music performance, so it wasn't costly, i wouldn't say its hard, its only hard if you don't understand the concepts.

I'm just starting my A level music and I am planing on going to a music college and I never did GCSE music. I am sure you are great and just be confident and trust your ability. If you love the music your playing then you will be fine :)

Also music's subjective, just cos you didn't do a piece well doesn't mean you're a bad player. Exams aren't a true reflection of your ability. If something sounds great then that's all that counts.

I did GCSE Music, though the syllabus has changed since I did it. THE most important thing, rather than your playing, is your understanding of music theory. You can be the most amazing player in the world, but if you have no grasp of music theory, you won't do well. I'm assuming from your pic that you're a guitar player? Learn both TAB and how to read stave music. If you already know both, great, you're already at an advantage! If you need any help with any aspect of music theory, I'll be happy to help. Can't help you with playing guitar as I'm only a beginner myself, so all I can say for that is keep practising, and your teacher will point out where you're going wrong so you can correct it :)

Thanks for the advice :) when I was teaching myself guitar I only learned how to tune it and how to read TAB but thats all I got from guitar for dummies. So I'm finding another book that teaches stave notes. My main problem is that a lot of the final grade is through performances.

I'm currently studing AQA Higher GCSE music and i'd say i'm not the best player ..but as long as you can play to about gr 2 standard and can master basic theory (note names lenghts etc ) and can pick out musical features for the listening tests you should be fine

I took it. And I hated it. That might be to do with the fact that I had the most horrible teacher ever. And also, like other people have mentioned, if you're not so great on the theory it won't go well at all. Bear that in mind when you weigh up your options.
