Grammar Lesson Jul 13 2012, 06:13 PM
I've noticed a lot of people not only on here but around the Internet, using the wrong words for different meanings. These are just some examples of what you should you use & where you should use it. I'm not trying to intentionally offend anyone with this. Because some people have exceptional grammar, just don't use the right words in sentences. Also, this could be useful for the foreign members on here learning English. -Examples- 1. Your; e.g Your hair is incredible. 2. You're; e.g You're such a good tennis player. 3. Their; e.g Their names are really weird. 4. They; e.g They have ice-cream on them. 5. They're; e.g They're such morons. 6. There; e.g There isn't any free stuff here. 7. There's; e.g There's the hobo that lives with Frank. 8. Here; e.g I wish I could stay here. 9. Hear; e.g They keep hearing strange noises. 10. To; e.g People keep trying to make me go. 11. Too; e.g My sister wanted to come along too. -Meanings & Usage- There is used for a location, item, etc. Their is used for a group of people. They're & You're are just shortened versions of They Are/You are. There's is a shortened version of There is. Here means a spot where you are currently at when you are talking to someone, so for e.g you're in the UK; You'd say 'Over here is really cold.' Hear is to listen. When you listen, you do it intentionally whether it's part of a public conversation or private. Hear is basically used when noises & sounds occur randomly. Get to know or become aware of, usually accidentally. To is used when you are using a verb in a sentence. For e.g you're going to the mall. You'd say 'Molly & I are going to the mall today.' Too is just another way of saying as well or also. Commonly used when someone says something you or another person can relate to so you say, Me too! Or for e.g another person can relate to it, You'd say; 'Oh, Sheldon feels that way too!' Hope I helped c;

Some people are just lazy and get into bad habits. I generally try and pay attention to proper use of grammar, but sometimes slip..

It really annoys me when people don't use the correct version of your/you're and there/their/they're (unless English isn't their first language, English is a confusing language!) The only time I don't use the right version is if I'm tired or drunk :L

Haha like Matt I too may "slip up" from time to time and at times I'm lazy, but I know how you feel! I get annoyed by the improper use of "it's" and "its". Several persons who use the web aren't too concerned about the proper use of grammar and those who use good grammar online are called "Grammar Nazi". I hope that persons will try to learn from this grammar lesson!

Plus not to seem like I'm up my own arse, but awful grammar is not cool. It makes you look a little stupid. The flip side of this argument is always going to be who cares it's easier..
