Same sex marriage Nov 28 2012, 09:49 AM
So the UK Government are finally proposing instating same sex marriages, I wanted to know your thoughts as I just wrote to my MP: "Dear Chris Evans, Recently David Camrons moves around equal marriage have been heavily publicised in the press. As a student activist and liberations campaigner I wanted to write to you to clarify your position on the issue. You have probably heard all the old cliché "Why can two people of the same sex who love each other marry, yet two people who hate each other can?" but you have to see the point they are making. We are living in more liberal communities than ever before with intolerance towards sexual orientation slowly dying out so it only seems right that we recognise same sex marriages as legally binding and do not just grant civil partnerships to "shut people up" which are symbolically not the same. Whilst the civil partnership is similar to marriage the segregated system of family law treats same-sex couples as though they are different and inferior by not extending all of the rights associated with the bonds of marriage, as well as this currently all religious celebrants are banned from conducting marriage or civil partnerships regardless of their beliefs. As you can already see our current legislation is far from providing equality, and it is surprising to see a conservative pushing for this after their move to disenfranchise students with their hike in tuition fees, scrapping of EMA, and not getting involved with the recent controversy over the banning of female bishops. In short I hope you are liberal in your beliefs and will support the move to instate same sex marriages. I look forward to your response. Yours sincerely, Christian James-Watkins"

thought it was topical for someone who lives in the uk to sniff this out again ... the debate of the equality bill has begun ...dividing parties left right and well people every where really ... should same sexes be able to get legally married in church? what it contains ( in simple BRIEF ) to clear up confusion : - NO church , cathedral or other religious or marital place will be forced to offer same sex marriage -same legal rights for same sex marriages unlike the present civil partnerships who have different legal rights - civil partners would be able to marry but what is the current problem ...well simple some politicians and people are stuck in the past and think this is the meaning of marriage: between a man and a woman NOT two people of the same gender. my personal opinion on the matter : the Government are NOT forcing ANY religious or ANY marital places to offer this so i can't see why they kicking up a fuss when they already allow civil partnerships in marital places This is the 21st century not the 1800's and things have changed, developed and moved on and frankly so should the law to accommodate this, after all isn't this country based on equality ? most importantly love is love ! if it's between opposite genders OR the same it is NO different!! so what are your opinions on this reopened debate??

Completely agree! I've always been a big supporter of gay marriage, and also of allowing straight people to have civil partnerships (having done some research on the topic last year for one of my exams, I found out that there are lots of straight couples who don't want to get married but want a civil partnership instead). I don't know how the church can say that gay marriage is a violation of the sanctity of marriage considering how many straight marriages end up in divorce in comparison to gay marriages!

I was quite peeved with a few MPs as you can see in my twitter stream, from newest to oldest (just a select few): "Lets hope the bigots are out voted in a moment. No one is listening to this guy speaking #equalmarriage" "Richard Drax democracy went down the drain the day your party took power... #equalmarriage" "Richard Drax it is not about the fucking Christian faith!! #equalmarriage" "Richard Drax if you feel this is outside of your comprehension then please sit down #equalmarriage" "Ambiguity allows interpenetration Mr Blackman, write a good bill and it will not allow peoples rights to be infringed #equalmarriage" "Civil partnerships do not equate to marriage in the eyes of the law Bob Blackman! Get your facts right! #equalmarriage" "Richard Fuller makes me think of Javert for some reason #LesMiserables #equalmarriage" "Will you pillocks stop bring the bible and religion into this! #equalmarriage" "Is Therese Coffey really saying this? #equalmarraige" "Ha a conservative commenting on equal access to education, are you kidding me??" "I may not define as #LGBTQ but I do define as an égalité and so support #equalmarriage I can not stand bigoted people such as these MPs!" "Reciprocity is just a part of what this bill is. #equality surely should be a human right and we all know the Tories want them abolished..." "Eric Ollerenshaw is definitely idiosyncratic with the majority of the public supporting #equalmarriage Religion is irrelevant here #equality" "Fuck off Matthew Offord you talk shit! There isnt just male or female and there will not be two types of marriage it will be #equalmarriage" "Christ. A Tory actually quoting Jesus. That bloke who wanted the rich to sell their goods." "Ian Paisley loving the sound of his own voice there... Sorry I meant talking shit #equalmarriage" "No mandate for this legislation? So what the public believe isn't a mandate now?? #equalmarriage" "God is not believed in by all, don't push your beliefs on others! #equalmarriage" Fortunately the second reading of the bill was passed and funding was released to work on the bill, I am disgusted with the 177 small minded bigots who voted against this bill.
