Random urges? Feb 24 2013, 04:09 AM
Can anybody help me with this? I'm a recovering self harmer and lately I've been having these completely random urges to cut again. I don't know what's been triggering them and I wouldn't say I was upset or doing anything that could trigger it when it happens. It's really intense as well and nothing I'm doing is helping. I've cut a few times since last month because of this. Does anyone else have this? How do you cope? Thankyou to anyone who can help me with this

This has happened to me so, so many times, and yeah, sometimes I've given in to it too. What does help sometimes is by pinging an elastic band around my wrist. It gives the same sense of relief (not as intensely but still) but obviously doesn't leave permanent marks. If that doesn't work, just try distracting yourself by any means possible. Play a video game, play an instrument, cook yourself something, call up a friend, anything that makes you think of something else. Hope this helps :)

It'll probably die down over time if you've only stopped recently. I know from experience, cutting for a while does them get in bedded in your brain to the point where if anything goes wrong, upsets you and/or whatnot, your will just straight off think "cut". It's just like going on to a diet where you most likely will have to stop eating something you love. You've just got to be determined and a little brutal on yourself. Therefore when you get urges you've just got to pull through it and resist. It's like a brick wall that you've got to break through. The psychophysical side will eventually quieten down and it will become easier over time. :)

I've actually been trying to stop for just over a year now. And I was doing quite well until last month :/ when I'm out tomorrow I'll buy myself some elastic bands and try to keep myself busy when I feel like cutting. Again, thanks for the help :)

that happens to me to i just try to find things to distract my self or keep bissy till i stop thinking about it. or if im having feelings that make me feel like i need to i just try to find what it is that is bothering me and solve it in another way. some times ill dance it off, start playing a game, right to some one, or what not. its not easy but the less you do it and the more you get it off your mind the easier it gets.
