I won't lie I'm going to die If you don't save my life And take away this knife I won't scream I won't even bleed I'll just cut so deep That I reach eternal sleep I came this close to life, by Chaos XIII

Alternative fashion and jobs... Sep 05 2013, 08:18 PM
I feel very unlike me without bright hair and I hate the way my ears look without plugs, my other piercing a have closed up and i hate being told to wear short sleeves, but because of my job (which is only part time in a fast food restaurant) I've had to lose all the above. I find it very insulting that we have to completely change who we are... I do agree, however that piercings could actually fall in food and stuff an that wouldn't be great, but it is just very hard to find a job where you can be yourself. And I guess presenting a "professional image" is important but why do piercings, tattoos and coloured hair make us any less professional? xD I don't want to sound like a whiney brat because I do understand the reasons, it's just not fair haha. I kinda feel like I'm missing out on the chance to do this whilst I'm still young(ish) xD Anyway just wandered if anyone felt the same, or oppositely, or if you have a job where you can completely be yourself. :) Interested to hear your opinions! :D

yhea it is a slight problem and i share the feeling. Me without my eyeliner feels really weird but i think the image of professional is something that won't go away from society but is something you have to learn to adapt to if you want to achieve unfortunately but look on the bright side you've always got weekends to dress the way you want to =) I'm currently studying A level Law and we have a really strict dress code for sitting in the public galleries in court (crown, magistrates etc) and i also work part time as a barmaid /waitress And the way I make my suits, smart casual'sand makeup alittle more alternative without losing the professional look is by toning down the makeup so I keep foundation and eye shadows neutral tones and as for eyeliner i tone it down to a smart top line flick and for clothes : shirts are shirts nothing you can really do but close fitting suit trousers look similar to skinny jeans and you can wear a slim studded belt to add a edge the rest is in accessories =) hair is a problem but if it's a natural colour dye i can't why they should have a problem , but you could try adding subtle highlights of colour to your hair if you want hope this helps alittle

so jobs differ.. i think it just depends on the manager. I remember being told that they ask you to take it all out or only allow you to have only ears pieced and whatnot is due not really because he doesn't like it but more for the fact of the customers. For example, an elderly couple may walk into a restaurant or a pub and if you have all those piecing in and have brightly coloured hair and whatnot, they may get intimidated and stuff...plus they may end up not coming back again which is not what you want. Some jobs are less restricting them others but it's just to make it so you don't intimidate customers and whatnot.

I work as a web developer and as I have meetings and stuff with clients I have some restrictions. However you are best asking because some people just assume they cannot dye there hair bright colours or have tattoos... if you talk it through with your manager some things may be possible.
