Not Allowed To Be Emo Jan 23 2014, 06:08 PM
So does anyone else have this problem? I shall explain. My parents are VERY Christian.... The color black is out of the question for them, even though I choose what I wear. They hate it. They don't really know the term 'Emo/Scene' but they are so against everything it stands for. When you want to express yourself they are against it because it's not Christian. I was talking and everything is about 'god'. I wasn't allowed to watch Harry Potter till I was 13 because it has 'witchcraft'. I've never been to hot topic. Why? "That's not a very nice store" - Mom Anyone else have parents like this? -_-

My parents are very forgiving but everyone else- not so much.... They are so judgmental so I tend to stay alone most of the time. I guess you can't really avoid your parents, you just gotta be understanding and trust them. (Until you turn 18 and you can do whatever you want)

my dad was like that when i turned 12 I started wearing more expressive clothing one time I went to his house with my nails black and he flipped out started screaming at me and said he never wanted to see me again if I wore black fingernail polish, I asked him "you would sacrifice your relationship and time with your daughter over the color of my nails??" he said yes. I wanted to keep my relationship with him so for a few months I would take it off before I went to his house I could never share my music with him and I felt like I had to hide half of me from him. the last straw was when he flipped on me for having an small s drawn on my jeans and them being ripped at the bottem him saying he couldn't take me anyware looking like that freaking out about what people would think of him saying my own family wouldn't love me for dressing like that. after that my relationship with him was done I was done being unhappy trying to meet up to his standereds and started being me its been 6 years since I have scene him and I couldn't be happier.

My parents never forbid anything. I just had to live with their stupid comments... :D In your case, that sound really terrible. How old are you now? Is there a chance to leave your parents' house soon? This would be a big step into your own future, I guess. If not, try not to provoke them too much but also do not deny your lifestyle. It's a part of you, so they should not want to change it.

Ouch, I really hate Christianity when it comes to them being so judgemental and want everything to be done their way. What you should do is wear simple basic emo clothes like checkered shoes, checkered lumberjack shirts over any emo band t-shirt and some skinny jeans. That's probably the extent of what you should do now. Hair keep it at a decent length. No piercings or eye liner or tats for you at this age please (especially tats, you do not want to be judged and criticized in school too!)

My family, particularly my dads side, all hate the clothes I wear and the music I listen to. Its all "Why do you wear this" and "You shouldn't listen to that". Therefore I don't really let my family know the fact that I am emo, though I think my mom may know and just not say anything. I think they would have a fit if they found out.

I started dressing like this when I was 13, I was very obsessed with BVB, the look, now is a bit more...I don't know how to describe it :/ but my dad and mum don't like it, when I ask for something like this: <a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171133261276?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D171133261276%26_rdc%3D1"> or <a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331075771345?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D331075771345%26_rdc%3D1"> my dad says 'oh, its to Gothic I don't like it' and I'm like 'I'm not Gothic, but if I had to label myself I'd be labeled as Metal with a bit of Emo. Also check out the site <a href="http://emo-fever.com/what-is-emo.htm"> it tells you the real meaning of Emo and try to get your perents to see to, Emo ain't Satanic or any crap like that, it's just music, what turned into a style. I hope I helped dude :)

My mum and brother are strict (ish) christians and i'm aware some of the subcultures stereo types do annoy /worry them... The best thing i found to do was gradually introduce a idea /concept gently to them ie wearing studded belts So i'd start with wearing a black black belt every day, for afew weeks then change to a small flat studded one then slowly move upto studs/spikes Slow/gradual change is rarely noticed until to late so it is a good way to go :) As for wearing black just because your "emo" dose not mean you have too wear just black. Many wear colours too! If you like wearing black try wearing greys/navy colours or maybe dark shades such as purples and greens then move into black when you and your parents are comfortable with it. Also sitting down and having a face to face family discussion over the table in a formal matter together, can help you identify why and what your parents truly feel /dislike about the subculture and then you can voice your ideas and perhaps come to some compromise over what you can and cant do. This way both you and your parents know how each other feel and have a agreement that suits both of you.. Hope this helps :)

well. I just read everyones posts right..? It's not as bad as you think it is. I've been dressing in this subculture since 11, and over time You learn to make small adjustments. I don't know. when I first started dressing this way, it was forbidden, just Like the author of this topic had it. slowly I got to gain more leniency, there for finally getting my hair cut this way, dye, clothes. etc. I really hate Christians views on this subculture, and music scene. it's bullshit. but, keep on trying if it's really worth it to you. my parents learned to not care anymore, about my band merch, hair or clothes as long as it wasn't too "graphic", vulgar or "Satantic". I ended up piercing my own septum, bridge, lip and stretching my ears to an 1 inch and they never really noticed. (my tunnels they did notice though, and I had to take them out xc) Just keep your little seagull head up and keep trying doll. c: ~ ♥ -littleseagull
