Drowning in depression Jun 12 2014, 02:47 PM
So I don't really go on much about this kind of stuff but I really need help or advice because it's getting worse, my self harm and depression in worsening and my family know I self harm but don't know I've been doing it recently it doesn't help that I'm schizophrenic but the worst thing that's happening is I keep having dreams about suicide, that's all I can think of at the moment. I'm not planning on killing myself but I just can't stop thinking about death, it's getting me really depressed which makes me self harm again and I really don't know what to do its a vicious circle and it's getting worse.

Hello there! I hope you don't mind me trying to give you a little bit of advice and hopefully a friendly word! First of all well done for expressing all this so well, it takes a lot of guts to admit to our problems but very often that's half the battle because your taking control! It sounds to me as if the weight of all the distress is mounting up and contributing to the "vicious circle" that you speak of. What you relly need to try and do is tackle each problem bit by bit. Its a gradual process and there isn't any overnight fix, but hopefully you'll recover so well that these problems won't reoccur in future. You mention that your parents are already aware that you are prone to self-harming. Have you or they ever sought help from a doctor or counsellor in relation to that or your schizophrenia? if not now might be the time to take that step. You can express your feelings very well which would be very helpful when describing your situation. The doctor may refer you to a psychologist who will also help with your other mental health issues and be able to put you on the correct medication. If you have been before it may be that the medication you're on for your schizophrenia is not also helping your other symptoms such as the depression and obsessional thoughts like the dreams. He or She may be able to re-access you just to make sure your getting exactly the right dosages and type or medication. They may also recommend Cognitive behaviour therapy which helps you take control of your thoughts so that they don't affect you on a daily basis. In the meantime try and focus on all the things you like in life, however small if it is a comforting thought or feeling try to make that your centre of attention. It can be very hard at first when you feel so down, but always know there is someone and something to live for! Its also reassuring that your family know you self-harm. That means if you urgently feel you need help they are at least aware of the situation and will hopefully be sympathetic and assist you in getting the help you need. I really hope you feel better soon, you've taken a brave step by typing your problem, hopefully that's one step closer to a full-recovery! If you would like to discuss anything else please feel free to message me and Good Luck! ;)
