Hi Broken Princess. First off, well done for plucking up the courage to attend your counsiling session, that is a brave step and must have been very difficult for you. It's unpleasent having people probing your thoughts looking for something "wrong" with you, but try and remember they are doing it to try and make life better for you, not to intrude or critisize you as a person. Now that they have identified your problems with depression they will of course look for ways to help combat it. You say you are scared because you don't know how to fight it. Well that is what the councillors are there to help you with, they will suggest a number of different methods to help you as you are feeling incapable of facing it on your own. Rest assured just because they are suggesting tablets it does NOT mean you won't ever be able to come off them or that you will have depression all your life, these tablets will help give you a boost UNTIL you feel capable of coming off them. For example with the medication I am on, they suggested to take it for a year and then attend a review, they will probably suggest something similar for you. They will go through all the options with you for tablets appropriate to your age to help minimize the side effects. These can be a bit uncomfotable at first, but usually ease quite soon after you take them, and because the medication is tailored to the individual they will monitor the side effects and may try something else if it affects you too severely. They may also suggest some cognitive behaviour thearpy to help alongside the tablets all designed to help. It can seem daunting at first, but stick with it and it will become easier. These people are on your side however difficult it may seem at the time. A note on depression. Anyone can "get" depression. Sometimes it can be partially hereditary (inherited from a family member) but in others it just happens. It can be the result of stress, trauma, or even a biological imbalance. Once they establish what the cause is, it can help speed up the recovery process. 1 in 4 people will suffer some sort of mental illness, many of these will be from family's with little or no history. It can be just an unfortunate illness that you can get, so don't feel strange or alone in your family. In fact with the hectic lifestyles people lead, it may be that depression will increase. Hopefully as people talk more about their experiences it will be easier for people to get help. It can be very distressing feeling you have nobody to turn to or talk too, but please continue to post on here and I'm sure people will be very supportive as so many are going through the same thing. Some people in day to day life may be a little bit scared to talk to you because they don't understand the difficulties you face. But here you will find encouragement, and it won't let you down! Just be strong to yourself and have faith that the medication will help and keep trying thats the main thing. Nothing works so much as self-belief! If you want to talk about any of your experiences, as always you are free to message. Best Wishes :)
