What made you define yourself as emo? Nov 11 2014, 11:24 AM
Mm, just out of curiosity... Could anybody tell me what made you define yourself as emo? I am living a pretty isolated life due to my job and other things so I've hardly met emo kids both on and off line "personally". I have encountered a few and their definition of emo seemed to be very different from mine. It's OK with me, because everybody has different perspectives and there is no right or wrong way of reading literature so it's OK to interpret being emo in different ways. So far, emo kids that I have encountered seem to have very similar issues and some of them I find very tragic. I hope I don't sound judgemental. I love emo kids but I am not fond of the negative stereotypes or labels that are put on them (including myself). All this is because I am very isolated and that's the reason why I am asking everybody.

The people I was around, the music I got into, the clothes I ended up liking and just my general attitude.

I see. I can see you're a very healthy person (who is also extremely attractive) and this means emo culture has influenced you in very positive ways. I guess it works differently on different people depending on how their interpretations are on the contexts :)

First, great to see that you write more than three words in a comment. I like that. This gives a base to debate on. Then, my definition is: An Emo listens to any kind of Emo music. And I mean REAL Emo music and not any pop or half-electronic band that claims to be Emo. I talk about Emocore, Screamo, 90's Emo and stuff like this. Then, an Emo has a generally melancholly attitude. This does not mean (s)he is depressive or has serious problems. It's more the romantic aspect of tragedy and despair which is celebrated. And third, an Emo can be defined by the styling, too. I don't have to explain how this looks like, you all know it. So I do fulfill all three factors and therefore define myself as Emo. It came to me like that: I have always been a melancholly person, being dressed in black since I was 13. Then I discovered Emo music around 2000/2001. I'd like to mention Thursday here as a waygiving band for me. And finally, I developed my styling to what became famous as the Emo look (which did not exist yet at that time, but I evolved with it).

I guess my love for not just emocore but any alternative music that i could relate to and really feel my emotions. I agree with Spinymouse that it's not about depression but appreciating the dark, sad, romantic side of life and being in touch with your emotions. I always was an emotional person but i would always let it out through music or poems, those two things have helped me a lot through moments were i feel down. I'm also in love with the style/fashion side of it which obviously isn't everything. All my favourite bands have helped me realize that it's okay to be yourself and an outcast because liking different things makes you special. I guess it's a way of expressing myself and putting how different i feel on the inside and matching it with the outside. :) I know emo is one of those things that everyone can have a different opinion about but in the end it means being in touch with yourself and being led by your heart so it doesn't matter what other people think.

I've always been a sensitive person and I never really fit in socially with 'normal' people and I like doing things like writing poetry and playing an instrument instead of things that other people might be interested in. When I was about 13 I met someone who was into emo and they introduced me to the style and music and I gradually found out more about it and felt like I really fit in with the subculture. :) Everything about it just seemed to fit me.

Well when I was 13 I started to listen to heavier music and wear darker clothes, but I think the point for me was when I started to wear heavy eyeliner when I was 14.

One day i decided to dye my hair black to see what it looked like and i kinda fell in love with it, so i kept it. I got asked if i was an emo by some people i knew. and over time i just started to listen to different music (metal) and wear dark cloths and stuff like that. xox
