Definetely important. There are some fantastic people online who are genuine and just as they appear, but as with real life meetings some people misuse the trust placed in them. You just have to take the proper precautions when meeting to keep yourself safe when meeting anyone new for the first time, carry a phone, tell someone where you are going, and don't meet anywhere remote. If you abide by this, you will be a lot safer and have more fun. If something feels wrong, don't be scared not to meet up, if they are a true friend they won't push you straight away.
