Guitarists - Favorite tuning to play in? Aug 08 2015, 08:07 AM
Personally I usually play in A#,really good for playing more bouncy/heavy stuff and just has a really good tone to it and still stays diverse, but for more melodic music I prefer C# or drop D tuning. Its always fun to say fuck it though and tune all the way down to G# or even F.

I play bass guitar and I love playing in drop d. I have a 4 string bass so the lowest I can tune to without my bass sounding terrible is drop c. Anything lower than that, I get spaghetti strings as my friends call them, lol. How are you guitarists able to drop tune to drop a# and such without the strings getting hard to play? Is there a certain brand of strings that are made for drop tuning that low?

Drop tunings are cool, like C and B. You'd need like a 56 minimum for that, EB's Not Even Slinky is good for drop c. For drop a# I'd put like an 80 gauge on the bottom string or something lol. These days you can get single strings individually in gauges so you can make up your own custom set. Now that there's loads of drop tuned bands now I'm sure brands can sell a few. I like open tunings too, like CGCFGC so you get that suspended type sound. Really nice with certain chords!

Hmm... For electric, I tend to aim for Drop G/A/B, especially when playing metal, especially doom metal. I tried Drop F before, it didn't really work out; and Drop E ended up as a disaster (ooooh look, noodles.). However, for lighter genres, drop C. For acoustic, I tune it a half step down. Gives it a slightly fuller sound, especially on the higher frets.

I do the same thing on my acoustic,I just like the sound more and it fits my singing voice better, for really low tunings (Pretty much anything below A) its better to have a 7-string or more electric, but you can get by with a six string by getting heavy gauge strings and having the right pedals to help compress the sound so it doesn't come out too sludgy, which is what I do, but even then I have to retune the top string about 15 times before it stays if I go below A,and anything below F# is just noodle-strings.

I've only ever played in basic tuning because I don't have a capo nor expirence to know how to tune it differently since i don't have a tuner
