Online Dating: Yay or Nay? Jan 01 2016, 10:53 AM
I get told, a lot, that online dating is wrong and that I should never meet anyone from online. But surely, there must be SOME advantages to online dating or else people wouldn't commit to it... right? My reasons for it is that I feel so awkward around people in the real world - whether I've known you five minutes or my whole life - I'm just naturally that timid, unsociable person that happily sits at the back on my own. Even so, online, I can be pretty awkward, coming out with random things; I ask a LOT of questions, rather that having a proper convosation. Rp (Role play: Online version of physical interaction and such) is another thing. I'm sorta okay with it as long as it doesn't involve sex. Ask me to rp 'fun' with you and I'll probably never talk to you again. So, what are your view on online dating?

My view is kind of the same as yours, because i'm also awkward in real life. I've met people only who i like and 1 of them actually became my best friend. My parents know her and her parents in real life so it turned out great! On the other hand, a online relationship forever, i could'nt do that. If i meet someone online and i get comfortable with that person, the only thing i can think of is meeting them, but most of the time i can't because of the distance. That's why i'm also scared to meet a person on here who i can start to like, and maybe love. I hope i made myself clear (my english isn't that great) so if you have any other questions feel free to ask! :)

I'm on the same boat of social anxiety and the internet being the best place to express yourself as you see fit. >^>; Online dating can be a great way to meet and get to know a person for their personality (without distracting yourself constantly over how hot or pretty they are which CAN impair your better judgement, in case they're a total jerk, or a bitch.) and even better when your feelings toward one another are mutual, and with skype video chat you can very whether or not the person you're really talking turns out to be who they say they are. At which point it's really awesome <3 However, online relationships take a lot of communication and effort on both people's side. Most importantly making an effort to eliminate the long distance factor every so often. And If feelings develop to something more serious, then you and your SO need to talk discussing plans for one of you to move to be much, much closer to the other. Or it's pretty much doomed to fail. but if there's a will, there's a way <3

Yay for sure as long as you meet up after no longer than a few months. Also avoid all the role playing stuff prior to meeting. Makes things far better in my opinion. I've met many girls online and dated a number of them and don't regret it..

Yay for sure as long as you both can see each other every so often. Dating someone online at the moment and don't regret meeting him and spending New Years with him :3

Its pretty much impossible for me to actually go out and meet someone, even a friend. My home, its literally a crime for me to leave my garden unless told too. Its got to the point that I'm not even allowed to walk to school 😶 and pre made arrangements.. Before their even made I'm interrogated about who I'd be with and What we'd do etc etc. My parents pretty much plan out my life from what career I'm going into and how much of my wages I have to give them -.- Does anyone else have this problem?

^ I used to have the same problem. I used to pretend to be at a cringe-worthy girly sleepover when I was actually going out to parties and meeting other people xD I don't recommend you do that. Next time you get asked where you're going and who you'll be with and what you're doing, be honest. Tell them what you're doing, who you'll be with and assure them you'll be safe. If they still stop you, then that's not right and they're being controlling, not making sure you're safe. Controlling someone like that is emotionally abusive. They cannot live your life for you. If you're living with them, they'll most likely expect you to pay rent/put some money towards food, bills etc. I'm guessing this is what they're talking about when talking about how much of your wages you should give them. Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do though. Unless your parents have a genuine reason to believe you won't be safe, they can't stop you from seeing friends. What made things better for me was showing my parents that I can and will move out if they continue trying to control me. I was sleeping around a friend's house and was about to make my next move when they asked me to come back so we could talk about things. I know you're only 15 but it's something to think about when you're legally old enough to move out.

Its not easy - they complain that I spend too much time in my room or at home, yet they don't allow me to go out. And its not as if I have any friends near me, they live on the other side of town. My parents have decided that they want half of whatever wages I get, or more since "I dont spend my money". 👈 But I'm not allowed out to spend it? I once got a belting for leaving the garden so... If I was to leave home, I'd have to go for good and never face them again. And they wonder why I spend so much time on the internet and don't socialise -.-

when you earn money , it's your money and no one should be able to take t away from you. it's your life and you should be allowed to live it. sorry to ressurect this post but i thought it'd be nice to say that. also i know its not as easy as flicking a switch and being free but when you turn eighteen they legaly have no control over you , especially if you move out. until then, if they're resonable enough to negotiate try to remind them that they're being too hard on you. If you can't negotiate and things get too much then try to get someone you trust that they'll listen to to talk to them . And if all else fails , try to remember that their control over you is limited to the little time left until you're an adult. i agree with undead nightmare. reminding them that you can leave may shock them into treating you better. As for the online dating thing , in my experience it ultimately doesnt work if you never meet them but until you get the chance to , try to speak regularly as that usually helps. good luck with everything :)

^ I'm weird. I accept being cheated on, personally. But not if it happened to, say, a friend. I dunno.. Being cheated on just proves to me that I'm not good enough for anyone, which is true tbh. Eh..

I've dated online many many times. I actually met someone, a very long time ago, over a game called "IMVU". We actually stayed together for almost a yr before he dumped me for "not being on anymore". But, as of right now, I am talking to someone whom I care, very, very, VERY much about. As long as you be truthful to the person, you can't go wrong unless you don't fully know the person's true colors. In the end, if you don't last, you'll know that that person wasn't right for you.
